Whether it’s the lack of recoil with guns, hit-and-miss sound design, dodgy aiming controls (especially on the snipers), or absence of advanced shooting mechanics like bullet drop, Enlisted just can’t compete with modern shooters. Shooting (you know, the main thing you do in any FPS game) also feels aged and incredibly unsatisfying. As a result, navigating the sprawling maps in Enlisted is a dizzying experience. On top of that, animations are incredibly dated and don’t feel authentic. I was playing on PS5, so I imagine (hope) the game will control better on PC. Your player character can be facing one way, only to be looking in the exact opposite direction a moment later for no reason. Most noticeable is the clunky and buggy movement.

Its gameplay would feel average on the PS2. They aren’t words that get you excited to play a game – and that’s because you really shouldn’t play Enlisted. Old fashioned, boring, clunky, unresponsive – these are adjectives that aptly suit Enlisted. So the fact it’s lacking top notch graphics, sound, and depth could be forgiven were the gameplay strong enough. Of course, it isn’t from a AAA developer. Enlisted game: GameplayĪs an MMO squad based shooter, Enlisted lives and dies on the quality of its action and gameplay. Unfortunately, it falls at every hurdle while trying to deliver on it. We’re not disputing that Enlisted has an interesting premise.

All that sounds pretty interesting, and it’s what prompted us to give it a try. Players drop into the heart of some of World War II’s biggest battles and control squads of AI soldiers (as well as one in traditional FPS fashion) through different large-scale game modes. Presenting itself as a potential Call of Duty/ Battlefield rival, Enlisted boasts some nice graphics and a unique take on the crowded first-person shooter genre. Some big YouTuber’s have covered its launch, but there hasn’t been any significant hype around it despite that.

It released as a free-to-play online shooter on 2nd March 2021 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. It deserves fans and this first iteration is good, but even making allowances for its early access status, I think it’s going to have to do something more in order to garner attention.Enlisted is a game you may not have heard much about. In many ways I feel sorry for Enlisted – from what I’ve seen so far, it’s a solid attempt at replicating the chaos of war, while offering a more rooted approach to combat.

It’s not as bad as some, but un-optimized things like scrolling through options while trying to figure out if I am supposed (or even allowed) to upgrade a squad shows that they haven’t done much (yet) to make the experience friendly to console players.

I often complain about UI that seems lifted straight from PC and Enlisted commits this sin. Realistic for sure, but certainly not engaging. The game also doesn’t seem to have a defense against tanks that isn’t ‘more tanks’, which leads to late-game imbalance where there are tanks everywhere and being on foot is a death sentence. One issue is that bushes vanish when looking at them down sights, which makes it possible to kill enemies that should not be visible. Enlisted aims for an emergent version of the beach moment from Saving Private Ryan, and the stress here is definitely evocative of that scene.Įnlisted is currently in early access and it shows, as there are definitely elements of the presentation that still need work.

Bullets ping off walls or zip past the player’s head, their presence made worse by the knowledge that it takes just one to end a player and force them to either pick another member of their squad or, if the squad is wiped out, pick a new squad. The battles and the gunplay are hellish, but in a good way. Matches are won by either overrunning checkpoints or controlling specific points for longer than the opponent (During my sessions, matches were played by a combination of human players and bots.) The basic game modes will be familiar to anyone who’s played an online first-person shooter before. I saw the term ‘MMO’ on the website, but I wasn’t really aware of that aspect during my playtime.

The ‘realism’ is in the quality of combat - tanks are powerful but clunky to use, and bullets down soldiers in one shot.Įnlisted also has a rudimentary levelling system with squads improving in quality and prowess. The player is in charge of a squad or vehicle and uses basic squad commands to hold down points and kill enemies. How Enlisted distinguishes itself is via visceral realism.

The World War II shooter has more entries than I can count, but even bolder than trying to crack this style is that it’s also entering the similarly-crowded online-only field. Enlisted is a bold attempt at tackling a bloated genre.
